The primary objective of this rare opportunity is to offer a clinical awareness to a global community of neurosurgeons that would otherwise be unable to gain a comparable experience. The referral patterns and centralization of rare brain conditions at Weill Cornell Medicine, provides an ideal training environment for advanced intraventriculr endoscopy. This program offers a three-month non-clinical observership under the direction of Dr. Mark Souweidane, Michels Family Professor of Pediatric Neurological Surgery and Vice Chair in the Department of Neurological Surgery at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine.
This experience provides the opportunity for learning advanced intraventricular neuroendoscopy—and is designed to familiarize neurosurgeons with the most innovative application of endoscopic surgery for:
- Intraventricular tumors
- Compartmentalized hydrocephalus
- Colloid cysts
- Intraventricular cyst
- Pineal region tumors
Applicants are expected to gain a solid working knowledge of procedures such as:
- Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV)
- Endoscopic tumor biopsy/resection
- Endoscopic removal of colloid cyst
- Endoscopic management of intracranial cysts
The participant will be expected to learn how to integrate the following technical adjuncts:
- Stereotactic guidance
- Video-endoscopy (flexible/steerable)
- Hemostasis
- Stent placement
The department will recruit candidates for this fellowship one year or more in advance of the start date. Fellowships typically run March-May, June-August, September-November and/or December-February. Accepted international participants are responsible for obtaining the appropriate U.S. visa and should work with Weill Cornell Medicine's immigration office to ensure they have the correct visa classification.
