We would never judge a book by its cover, but we are rather partial to academic journal covers that feature our work. Our faculty members have been publishing cover-worthy journal articles for more than two decades. Here we bring you a gallery of our cover stories.

2024: Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery

Dr. Gary Kocharian and Dr. Y. Pierre Gobin co-authored a retrospective article, "Advancements in super-selective catheterization and drug selection for intra-arterial chemotherapy for retinoblastoma: a 15-year evolution"

2024: Journal of Neurosurgery

From Theodore Schwartz, “The Lateral Transorbital Approach to the Medial Sphenoid Wing, Anterior Clinoid, Middle Fossa, Cavernous Sinus, and Meckel's Cave: Target-Based Classification, Approach-Related Complications, and Intermediate-Term Ocular Outcomes"

Dr. Kaplitt and his team wrote the cover story, “Focused ultrasound–mediated blood-brain barrier opening in Alzheimer’s disease: long-term safety, imaging, and cognitive outcomes”

2021: World Neurosurgery

Dr. Susan Pannullo was editorial lead on this 3-article edition of the Annals of Weill Cornell Neurosurgery series. Authors from the clinical, education, and administrative staff covered the pandemic crisis—and the response of the hospital at its center

2019: Operative Neurosurgery

Dr. Antonio Bernardo was senior author of “On the Surgical Implications of Peritrigeminal Perforating Vessels in Microvascular Decompression,” the August cover, joined by Dr. Alex Evins and Dr. Philip E. Stieg, among others.

2019: Journal of Neurosugery: Spine

Dr. Roger Hartl co-authored the August cover story, “Arachnoid Web of The Spine: A Systematic Literature Review,” with senior author Ali Baaj, MD, and co-authors Ibrahim Hussain, MD, Samuel Kim, MD, and then-medical-student Peyton Nisson.

2019: Journal of Neurosurgery

Dr. Kaplitt was the senior author of the March 2019 cover story, “Focused Ultrasound Mediates Safe and Stable Non-Invasive Focal Gene Delivery to the Mammalian Brain.”

2018: Journal of Neurosurgery

Dr. Michael Kaplitt was senior author on “Clinical Improvement Associated With Targeted Interruption of the Cerebellothalamic Tract Following MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound for Essential Tremor,” co-authored by Levi Chazen, Robert Min, and Philip Stieg.

2017: Journal of Neurosurgery Pediatrics

Dr. Mark Souweidane was the senior author on “Influence of an Intratumoral Cyst on Drug Distribution By Convection-Enhanced Delivery: Case Report,” the cover story of the September issue.

2015: Journal of Neurosurgery

Dr. Antonio Bernardo, director of our Neurosurgical Innovations and Training Center, co-authored this cover story, “A 3D Endoscopic Transtubular Transcallosal Approach to the Third Ventricle,” with Dr. Philip Stieg others.

2014: Operative Neurosurgery

Dr. Roger Hartl was senior author on this cover story, “Minimally Invasive Foraminotomy Through Tubular Retractors Via a Contralateral Approach in Patients With Unilateral Radiculopathy”

2012: Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine

Dr Roger Hartl and his NYC-MISS co-director Luiz Pimenta were co-authors on “Minimally Invasive Lateral Approach for Symptomatic Thoracic Disc Herniation: Initial Multicenter Clinical Experience”

"Gene Therapy for Late Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis: Neurosurgical Considerations," from an all-star lineup of authors including Dr. Kaplitt, Dr. Souweidane, Dr. Kosofsky, Dr. Heier, and Dr. Crystal

2010: Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics

Dr. Mark Souweidane was a co-author on this cover story, “Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in Patients With a Diminished Prepontine Interval.”

2010: Journal of Neurosurgery

In May 2010, “Endoscopic Management of Spontaneous Meningoencephalocele of the Lateral Sphenoid Sinus” made the cover of the Journal of Neurosurgery. Senior author Theodore Schwartz, MD, collaborated with Drs. Vijay Anand and Abtin Tabaee,, among others.

2008: Journal of Neurosurgery Pediatrics

Dr. Mark Souweidane, Dr. Caitlin Hoffman, and Dr. Theodore Schwartz co-authored this cover story, "Transcavum Interforniceal Endoscopic Surgery of the Third Ventricle."

2007: The Lancet

Dr. Michael Kaplitt's breakthrough paper was featured on the cover of this prominent journal: "Safety and Tolerability of AAV-GAD Gene Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease: An open-label, phase I trial"

2010: Science Translational Medicine

Dr. Kaplitt worked with Nobel laureate Paul Greengard on "Reversal of depressed behaviors in mice by p11 gene therapy in the nucleus accumbens"

2007: Journal of Neurosurgery

Dr. Antonio Bernardo, who now directs our Neurosurgical Innovations and Training Center, co-authored "Anatomical study of the superior orbital fissure as seen during a pterional approach."

2004: Barrow Quarterly

The cover story, "Sacral Amputation for Sarcoma: A Case Report," was co-authored by Roger Hartl

1996: Neurosurgery

A medical student named Marty Zonenshayn co-authored the cover story in this issue. Dr. Zonenshayn is now one of our faculty members at NYP Brooklyn Methodist. The editor's letter in this issue was written by Dr. Michael Apuzzo, now an esteemed advisor
