Dr. Roger Hartl, the Hansen-MacDonald Professor of Neurological Surgery and Director of Neurosurgery Spine at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been appointed to the board of directors of the North American Spine Society (NASS). An internationally renowned spine surgeon specializing in minimally invasive techniques and advanced spinal navigation, Dr. Hartl is the founder and director of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian at the Weill Cornell Medicine Center for Comprehensive Spine Care as well as the founder of Weill Cornell Medicine's Global Neurosurgery Initiative in Tanzania. A leading expert on neurotrauma, he is also the official neurosurgeon for the New York Giants football team.
Dr. Hartl directs the annual NYC-MISS course, now in its 18th year. NYC-MISS, the New York City Minimally Invasive Spine Seminar, features advanced new technology in minimal-access spine surgery with and without navigation. An international faculty presents a day of lectures, panel discussions, and debate, including the famed Socratic Battle. A full day in the Weill Cornell Medicine anatomy lab offers hands-on training on both cadavers and high-tech simulation models. For the past several years the course has included virtual reality and augmented reality demonstrations and training. (See more about NYC-MISS.)
NASS was founded in 1984 as a multidisciplinary organization of spine care providers, and has grown to become the largest spine society in the world. It now has more 8,000 members in 22 specialties. The organization sets standards, provides education, and advocates for the highest quality spine care for all patients.
Dr. Hartl is routinely named to lists of top doctors, best spine surgeons, and leading neurosurgeons. He has been named Humanitarian of the Year (AANS, 2022) and was recently elected to the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. In 2023 he was the inaugural winner of the Hans Kraus Award for education in muscle pain. He now joins the NASS board of directors as an at-large member, with a three-year term beginning November 1, 2024.
